What Does it Mean to Be Healthy?
Lesson 1 Chapter 1
Introductory Note About Patient Education:
At Equilibrium Natural health we see our patients as much more than people we prescribe treatments to. We recognize you, the patient, as the most influential in your health. We partner with you to empower you with the knowledge needed to make educated health decisions in your life. Our experience shows that if a patient can have a basic understanding of the 'why' and 'how' behind their health, they will be much better prepared to effectively implement healthy habits into their lives. Please take time to review the five brief lessons in this course 'Introduction to Natural Medicine'.
The World Health Organization defined health as the following,
"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
In 1986, the W.H.O. further clarified that health is:
"A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities."
As illustrated, healthy living is not defined by an absence of symptoms- they are only half the battle. Wellness is defined by the individuals awareness, education and growth in their health. Wellness is being pro-active about health, not simply going to the doctor every time something hurts. Remember, it's not as important where you may be currently standing as it is which direction you are trying to go. Four Corners Health
Most people go to the doctor because they have symptoms that affect their health. These symptoms are likely uncomfortable and most want them to stop. Traditional healthcare does a pretty good job at helping symptoms to reduce. Addressing and curing symptoms and getting to the neutral point on the continuum is a fine place for some people. However others want better health than just not having to take medications any more. Some people want more energy, to have better sleep or to enjoy more healthy relationships. The healthcare we provide at Equilibrium Natural Health meets that need. While we work with patients on curing symptoms naturally, our fundamental practices also help to move our patients towards high-level wellness at the same time.
The Insurance View On Health And Wellness
Most people think they have healthcare to keep themselves well but that is not what health care is setup for. Traditional healthcare would more appropriately be labeled as 'disease care' instead of 'wellness care'.
Medicare guidelines, section 2251.3 (guidelines for all insurances):
“A treatment plan that seeks to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong and enhance the quality of life; or therapy is performed to maintain or prevent deterioration of a chronic condition is deemed not medically necessary”
In other words, traditional medicine does not cover actually getting well, moving past getting rid of symptoms if that is what you are interested in doing. That does not mean they won't be able to help you with your symptoms, however it is important for you to understand traditional medicine will only get you so far.
All in all, seeing your health as a proactive practice in your life will help you to receive the very greatest benefits you can while working with us Equilibrium Natural Health. Addressing your symptoms while moving you towards high-level wellness requires looking at all components of your health, a method we call 'the triangle of health', which we cover in the next lesson.
